(Little Rock, Ark.) KTHV -- Little Rock police are on the scene of a shooting on West Capitol Street at the state Democratic party headquarters. The Arkansas Democratic Party says the chairman, Bill Gwatney, is hospitalized in critical condition after incident. Little Rock police say a suspect in the shooting was shot after after a chase that ended near Sheridan in Grant County.

A sales clerk at a flower shop across street from the party headquarters said that around noon, Gwatney's secretary ran into the shop and asked someone to call 911. She said a man had come into the party headquarters and shot Gwatney several times.

The suspect reportedly entered the party headquarters and asked to speak with Gwatney before firing three shots.

The 1300 block West Capitol was shut down after the shooting, just blocks from the state capitol in downtown Little Rock.

Officers said they pursued a white man in his 40's that fled the scene in a blue Dodge pickup truck. Police say the suspect was apprehended following a chase that stretched into Grant County, south of Little Rock. Police say the suspect was shot by Arkansas State Police troopers during his capture near Sheridan. The suspect's condition was not immediately known.

What kind of madness is this?!?

More details from MSNBC/AP:

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - A gunman entered the Arkansas Democratic Party headquarters Wednesday and shot the party chairman, who was hospitalized in critical condition, authorities said.

The gunman asked to speak to the party chairman, Bill Gwatney , and fired three shots.

"He came in and went into this office and started shooting," police Lt. Terry Hastings told reporters near the party headquarters.

Gwatney, a former legislator, was in critical condition, Hastings said.

The suspect was chased into Grant County, south of Little Rock, and apprehended after being shot, the police spokesman said. The suspect's condition was not known.

Sarah Lee, a sales clerk at a flower shop across street from the party headquarters, said that around noon Gwatney's secretary ran into the shop and asked someone to call 911. She said a man had come into the party and shot Gwatney multiple times.

Lee said the secretary told her the man had come into the party's office and asked to speak with Gwatney. When the secretary said she wouldn't allow him to meet with Gwatney, the man went into his office and shot him, Lee said.

She said the secretary described the man as in his 40s and white and drove off in a blue truck.

[editor's note, by fogiv] Let's all keep in mind that (at this point) we don't know what motivated this person to violence.

Update [2008-8-13 14:55:56 by fogiv]:More from above source:

Witnesses told NBC Little Rock affiliate the shooter talked with a few party employees at the headquarters, complaining that he had lost his job.

FBI spokesman Steve Frazier said his agency was assisting in the investigation but could not offer any details. "We're aware of it. We're helping the state police right now," Frazier said.

Party director Bruce Sinclair and House Majority Leader Steve Harelson, a Democrat, identified Gwatney as the victim.

Gov. Mike Beebe, a Democrat who served with Gwatney in the Legislature, had been on a flight to Springdale in northwestern Arkansas but returned to the Capitol after hearing about the shooting, Beebe spokesman Matt DeCample said.

Karen Ray, executive director of the Republican Party of Arkansas, sent her workers home early "out of an abundance of caution."

"Our hearts go out to everyone at the Democratic headquarters. What a tragedy," Ray said. "This is just a very upsetting, troubling and scary thing for our staff as well."

Gwatney, who owns and operates three car dealerships in Pulaski County, served 10 years in the state Senate. Gwatney was Beebe's finance chairman during Beebe's run for governor in 2006.

Lemme see if i can recall some from memory (all "sic")

"Looks like Obama is putting hits out on clinton supporters"

"this is the beginning of the coming race war"

"now the obamabots will start blaming clinton"

Expected brainless FOX-worthy commentary.  Conspiracy theories, blaming the clintons, blaming obama, blaming the democrats...  Some fairly heartless shit (listening, ZSG?), must have gotten uglier after I put my comment up (thoughts for the victim and family, request that some commenters go take a long introspective in the mirror...) for them to take them all down.

Worrying trend. (2.00 / 3)

This is incredibly disturbing, especially after the church shooting earlier in the summer.

While this is not yet a major trend, it does seem to hint that there may be a number of these guys who have no real qualms about shooting people they disagree with ideologically and now that they feel threatened they are actually doing it.

I'm afraid that these nuts are going to come out of the woodwork over the next few months, and this may get worse before it gets better. :(

Re: Worrying trend. (none / 0)

You gotta point there and I think it is linked not necessarily so much with the Limbaugh's (though I am sure it is absolutely seasoning for the hate) but with the Bush Admin's neo-con approach of injecting uproarious fear propaganda into the everyday lives of of our citizens.  Terror alert color codes...WTF does that do except distract people from whatever else maybe going on?  Oh yeah, it also creates chaos, so those that wish to instill or revise current laws/rights/economic policies/military action/discrimination/etc. are able to do so quite freely and unsuspected while the town square is in full panic.
It also breeds contempt and suspicion against  those that appear different, which can lead to disastrious results.  I am not laying this directly at the feet of Bush, but let's not ignore the fact that sensitive or susceptible people are easily led, regardless of the intent of those in power/control/large voice, down a path of hatred that can manifest in physical acts of violence.

Re: BREAKING: Arkansas Dem. Chair Shot; Criticall (2.00 / 2)

That is a fair enough point.

However, for me it seems that the lack of motive information implies something either related ideology or plain craziness.

In general if there's a background, someone in the office who witnessed it would provide more information to the media.

Re: BREAKING: Arkansas Dem. Chair Shot; Criticall (1.66 / 3)

Yeah, but more typical is that all sorts of rumors fly around in the immediate wake of an incident, and we don't get the real story until later.  I seem to recall that when there was that hostage incident during the primaries at one of Clinton's campaign offices, the networks kept reporting all kinds of stuff that just wasn't true.

Re: BREAKING: Arkansas Dem. Chair Shot; Criticall (2.00 / 1)

Agreed.  We have no idea what motivated this asshole, though reports up to now seem to hint that Bill Gwatney was targeted specifically.  Who knows, we'll have to wait and see.  Sounds like the suspect was shot and killed, so we may never know what drove the guy to senseless violence.

Let's just hope Gwatney pulls through OK.

Re: BREAKING: Arkansas Dem. Chair Shot; Criticall (2.00 / 2)

The fact that Gwatney was targeted specifically probably limits the motivations to personal and professional (he owns car dealerships).

The only thing I remember about Gwatney was his slam on Huckabee: "Pinning Huckabee down on an issue is like nailing Jello to the wall."

Here's hoping he recovers...

Expect more right wing violence as Democrats regain power and influence...  just like it did during Clinton's first term.

It's important to expose these wingnuts for who they are, and make sure the public is aware of who they are listening to (i.e. Rush Limbaugh)

I don't mean for this to be odd or misplaced but I truly hope he was not targeted because of his position in our Party..

Re: Does anyone else think (none / 0)

What else would you call it.

Premeditated murder is assassination.

If the man walked in, lied about his purpose, then pushed people out of his way to fire, that is premediation.

But since we're liberals, and the media hates us, this will be portrayed as a poor white god loving man gone astray, that just happened to shoot another man.

We live in a sick sick country,  I promise you the ASSASNATION of a politician will not get even 10% of the Coverage that a politician who cheets on his wife.

Re: I'd love to see (none / 0)

Or maybe, just maybe they could frame it:

In the last two weeks a right wing terrorist burst into an AMERICAN Church, a place that globaly is considered a safe zone, was attacked by a gunmen.

An other sleeper terrorist was busted by the Secret Service for planning an assanitation on Barack Obama.

Then today another Right Wing Terrorist snuck into Arkansas DNC office and murdered the chaiman, then fled and commit suicide.

Why is the media so fucking scared of the right wing.

I remember back in 1999, the term Domestic Terrorism was a real word, a word we affording Timothy McVeigh.

Then 2001 came around, and referring to Domestic Terrorism for what it is gets you either rolling eyes or dirty looks.

WHY?!?
