Column on Columns

The GOP and it's leading spokespersons (well, Rush Limbaugh, but if it's all you got...) are all ready to make a huge fuss over the stage at Denver's Invesco Field.

Apparently there are columns in the backdrop.  Oh my.

What kind of hubris it would be to use columns in the background of a US electorial speech?  How assuming, how arrogant, gosh, how un-American can you get?!?

Here's a sneak preview:

Photobucket

In the round, Greco-Roman columns in the background - a paragon of arrogance!

Oops, hang on a second, I seem to have mixed things up here, because That's George Bush at the 2004 Republican National Convention.

Well, you know what I mean.  Only the presumptuous Democrats would stage a scene like this:

Photobucket

Dangit, did it again!  That's the Virginia GOP Governor's convention...

Well, anyway, we all know how un-American Greco-Roman columns are!  Show me one prominent place where such foreign architecture intrudes on the Land of the Free!

Photobucket

Sure, yeah, whatever.  Bunch of old buildings, now show me someplace that actually matters!

Photobucket

Smartass.  It's all that damn subversive Jefferson's fault...

Yikes.  That first one is actually pretty creepy.

Re: Column on Columns (2.00 / 5)

Yeah, I got all worried about it, too, but then I saw the set, and I was like... what's the big deal?

It doesn't look gaudy or pretentious at all... it's rather austere, actually...

Once people see it, most people will have the same reaction I did... that being... big deal....

I just saw a pic (2.00 / 4)

on the NYtimes website of those columns. My first thought was... why? I do think it is silly for the MSM and the repukes to pick on this, but at least from seeing that pic, it looks silly. They will only look "good" in close up pictures if he stands directly in front of them.

One other thing. I thought I saw that the stage was in the center of the field. How can you have a backdrop on stage if you are doing an "in the round" setting?

Just some thoughts and observations.

Real patriots only pose with "Doric" columns.

This is well know by all true patriots.

Very Ionic Chris! (2.00 / 2)

Iony abounds in this diary, however, I usually go for Corinthian...It's just a matter of personal taste really.

The core 'n thin'in around here (2.00 / 2)

is usually horribly ionic, but we shouldn't let that be an in-pediment to trying to control our adorian' enthusiasm. It may be a bit archaic, but if we lose control we could be bound for hell 'n is ticklish what to do if that happens.  Best to keep it platonic so cratics can't unduly harp on us (please excuse the typhos...)

Sorry, my mind gets romin' around like this and before you know it I can't carry it, id all aflame, any further. Best let it rest before this whole topic starts "dyin' 'neath us", to koine a phrase...

Hah...the potential for a bizarre conversation to sprout in this field of chaos, is very high.

Re: Column on Columns (2.00 / 4)

Obama has been dropping hints that this is going to be a serious policy speech about his agenda - what I might call a "Hillary speech," heh - as opposed to 2004 convention speech v.2.

If he follows through on that, if he makes his case directly to the voters, no one will care if the GOP wants to chortle about the stagecraft.  If they call you substance-free, proving them wrong kills two birds with one stone.

Re: Column on Columns (2.00 / 3)

And here I thought this was going to be a column about the old Sega Genesis game, Columns!

Anyway, the whole thing is just another example of the reich wing throwing anything and everything, no matter how contrived and ridiculous it is, against the wall. They figure one of those pieces of shit they throw against the wall might have the right texture to stick.

Sorry for the visual. ;-)

Pathetic that they feel there is time to (2.00 / 3)

make the set of the stage into an issue.  Three words for the GOP - get a life!

by activatedbybush on Thu Aug 28, 2008 at 01:53:26 PM EST

I'm stoked that this is their issue (2.00 / 2)

Nothing about the speeches, nothing about disunity, nothing about any sort of riot outside the hall.  Nope.  They're forced to talk about Obama's half finished (at the time of the photos) backdrop.  That's how you know it's been a great convention.

But in the unlikely story that is America, there has never been anything false about hope.

You've given me the first laugh I've had in weeks. The idea of Limbaugh bloviating about columns is so stupid, one doesn't know whether to laugh or cry.......
